Grade 4 is a key year for developing a deeper understanding of grammar and how the English language works. Children begin to explore all the parts of speech - the building blocks of every sentence! Understanding how each type of word functions helps young writers create sentences that are clear, engaging, and full of meaning.

Typical grammar topics covered in Grade 4 include:

Parts of Speech - Learning about nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions

Complex Sentences - Combining ideas using different clauses

Punctuation - Using commas, quotation marks, and apostrophes correctly

Synonyms & Antonyms - Expanding vocabulary and improving word choice

Verb Tenses - Understanding irregular verbs and consistency in tense

Paragraph Structure - Writing longer, organized pieces of text

What Are the Parts of Speech?

The parts of speech are categories that show how words function in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech, and understanding how they work together helps children become stronger writers and readers.

Here’s a breakdown of the main ones your child will study in Grade 4:

  • Nouns - Name people, places, things, or ideas.

Example: zookeeper, city, adventure

  • Pronouns - Replace nouns to avoid repetition.

Example: he, she, it, they

  • Verbs - Show action or a state of being.

Example: run, jump, is, were

  • Adjectives - Describe nouns.

Example: bright, funny, tall

  • Adverbs - Describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Example: quickly, very, quietly

  • Conjunctions - Connect words or groups of words.

Example: and, but, because

  • Prepositions - Show relationships between words.

Example: under, beside, during

  • Interjections - Show strong emotion or surprise.

Example: Wow! Oh no! Hooray!

Recognizing the parts of speech helps children understand sentence patterns and choose the best words to express their ideas. It also improves reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing accuracy. When students know how words work, they can craft writing that is more interesting and grammatically correct.

Encourage your child to identify parts of speech while reading or writing - for example, asking questions like “Which words are describing something?” or “Which word is the action?” can make grammar more interactive and fun!
