Grade 5 is where children start to take their grammar and writing to the next level! This year, children learn how to make their sentences more detailed and sophisticated by using complex sentences and clauses. These skills help students write with greater variety, clarity, and flow.
Typical grammar topics covered in Grade 5 include:
Clauses - Understanding main (independent) and subordinate (dependent) clauses
Complex Sentences - Combining ideas to show relationships between them
Conjunctions - Using subordinating and coordinating conjunctions effectively
Verb Tenses - Maintaining consistency in longer pieces of writing
Punctuation - Using commas and conjunctions correctly
Sentence Variety - Writing with rhythm and balance
A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. Clauses are the building blocks of sentences!
There are two main types:
Can stand alone as a complete sentence because it expresses a full thought.
Example: Will the Zookeeper discovered a secret door.
Cannot stand alone. It adds extra information and usually begins with a subordinating conjunction such as because, although, when, or if.
Example: …because the moon was shining brightly.
When you combine both, you create a complex sentence!
A complex sentence joins an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses. This helps writers show cause and effect, contrast, or sequence - making writing richer and more engaging.
Examples:
Will the Zookeeper discovered a secret door because the moon was shining brightly.
Although it was late, the animals continued their adventure.
The children gasped when the magical portal opened.
Notice how complex sentences explain why, when, or how something happens. They give writing more depth and meaning than short, simple sentences.
Learning how to use clauses and complex sentences helps children express detailed ideas and connect thoughts smoothly. These skills improve both creative and academic writing, encouraging students to write with purpose and style. Understanding how to vary sentence types also makes writing sound more natural and mature.
Encourage your child to experiment with combining simple sentences into longer ones - it’s a fun way to build confidence and fluency!
